Story
Overview
Travelling has been a personal interest of mine for the last 3 years or so. I travelled Europe in 2011, and in February 2012 I flew to Australia to travel for 10 months. I only knew two people out there and they took me in and helped me settle in. I ended up spending just under a year with these two people and their families, and they became two of my closest friends. I arrived back home in England in December 2012, and two weeks later I heard the worst news imaginable. My friend had been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. She is only 22 years old and one of the nicest people I have ever met. For someone so young to have this condition has really put life into perspective for me. The fact that 1 in 3 people will at some stage have cancer, is an astonishing statistic, and makes me want to do something to contribute towards the people that help families with this awful disease.
Challenge
Myself and 5 of my friends are going to partake in the ‘3 Peaks Challenge’ which consists of walking up 3 mountains (Scafell Pike in England, Ben Nevis in Scotland and Snowdon in Wales) within 24 hours. We will be starting this challenge on Thursday 23 May 2013. It will be a huge physical challenge for us that will be for an unbelievable cause, but it will be nowhere near as difficult as the challenge people go through every day when living with Cancer. We will be looking to raise as much money as we can for Macmillan Cancer Support charity.
Macmillan Cancer Support
Macmillan are a source of support, helping with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need. It's not only patients who live with cancer, MacMillan also help carers, families and communities. They guide people through the system, supporting them every step of the way. They also fund nurses and other specialist health care professionals and build cancer care centres. They also help out in many other ways. People need practical support at home, and MacMillan provides anything from some precious time off for a carer, to a lift to hospital. People need emotional support too, so they listen, advise and share information though their cancer support specialists, website and trained professionals. People need financial help to cope with the extra costs cancer can bring, so MacMillan give benefits advice, and grants for anything from heating bills to travel costs. So the more money we can contribute to this fantastic charity, in our eyes the better!
Initially we would like to raise at least £500 so have set that as our target. All in all we want to help in any way we can to support a brilliant charity, as well as supporting a friend in this tragic situation.
Any donation is welcome! Many thanks for reading.
