King’s has been named the 31st best university in the world and 5th best in the UK in the QS World University rankings 2026. As we look towards our 200th anniversary, King's vision is to make the world a better place through our excellence in teaching, research and service to society.

Story

As many of you know, in January last year, Milo (our brother/son) was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.  This is a chronic disease with some very unpleasant symptoms and there is currently no cure.

However, a team of scientists at King’s College London, led by Prof John Herman-Taylor have, for the last 30 years, been working on a vaccine to prevent and even cure Crohn’s disease.  They have established a link between a type of bacteria, called MAP (Mycobacterium avium, subspecies paratuberculosis) and Crohn’s disease, and have developed a vaccine to treat Crohn’s disease.

So, we (Jim, Poppy and Emmy) have decided to fundraise in support of the MAP Vaccine team.  Our initial idea to do a short straightforward run was quickly rejected by Jim, who has taken much pride in devising our challenge: The School Run.  This consists of a 60 mile journey beginning at our home in Wiltshire and passing near each of the schools that Milo has been to and ending at Eton.  We have split the run into sections meaning each of us will run 20 miles!  It is going to be a long day!

We are planning to do the run on Saturday May 30th and would hugely appreciate your support in raising money to help this potentially life-changing research to change the lives of all those suffering with Crohn’s disease.

The money we raise will go directly to the MAP Vaccine team to enable them to test Crohn’s sufferers for MAP and then go on to manufacture the MAP Vaccine and put it into clinical trials.

It seems like an incredibly daunting task for us runners, especially now the reality of training is kicking in, but having seen first hand the horrible effects of this disease, and how immensely it can affect sufferers lives, we are very determined to complete it  - hopefully before the sun goes down!  So a huge thank you in advance for your support!
