I'm running the 10K ladies race at the Brufort Run in The Gambia on Saturday 17th December. I am running in aid of Basic Foundations, a charity set up by my friend Sam, a fellow VSO volunteer here is Basse. It aims to support small community based organisations to get the basic necessities they really need to help people in low income countries.

At the moment they are working on raising money to build a garden project for the Rural Support Organisation for the Disabled here in Basse which Sam is currently working for as a VSO volunteer.

RSOD are the only organisation supporting disabled people in the rural areas and they are truly inspirational, not least because most of the ‘staff’ are actually volunteers and the organisation has no ongoing funding. The idea of the garden project is to support disabled people, some of the poorest in the country, to learn skills, earn a living and to support RSOD as an income generating project to help with their operational costs.

This organisation also run a Nursery school that is fully inclusive of children with disabilities and is one that I am working closely with as a VSO volunteer. I know that this garden project would be terrific for the organisation and the school.
