Story
So I’m going to run the London Marathon……aargh! Can’t quite believe it myself.
It’s going to be a huge achievement for me and none like any other experience in my life so far. Having been the girl at school that hid in a bush on the cross country before they came back around again….I was totally surprised to find that once I started running (initially to get fit cheaply!) I actually really loved doing it.
Now of course I have an even greater reason for running. Raising money for Harrisons Fund.
Harrison is a friend of our son Henry. He's a cheeky 7yr old little boy with a gorgeous smile and a huge thirst for life. To most people Harrison looks completely healthy. But on the inside, this powerful little boy is struggling. His muscles are deteriorating at an alarming rate. Because he has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. By the time he's a teenager Harrison will lose the ability to walk. Eventually he'll lose all muscle function in his body. Like all boys with Duchenne he'll die in his late teens or early twenties from heart or respiratory failure.
As a parent, like many of my friends are now too I can only imagine the devastation you must feel to be told your child, your heart and soul, your future hope has a disease that will take them away from you before even having the chance of experiencing university or finding the love of their life. It’s wholly unfair.
Harrison’s parents, Alex and Donna are two amazingly strong and motivated people. They are realists but like all of us parents, they are full of hope too. They have spoken to some of the best organisations in the world fighting Duchenne and it's clear that for the very first time there may actually be a chance of a major breakthrough. Over the past few years, scientists have made giant strides in gene therapy and molecular medicine, and pharmaceutical companies have begun investing in research that may well bring Duchenne therapies to market
Their goal is to stop Duchenne, or at least find a way to slow it down significantly, before it has a chance to dim the twinkle in Harrison's eye.
Please give whatever you can to help Harrison and to help me to get round those 26 miles!! I’ll be a broken woman afterwards I’m sure but I know I will feel great. So with your help and cash we will have gone some way towards making life better for the gorgeous Harrison and other boys just like him.
