Story

I am a registered nurse at The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and take great pride in nursing our injured troops, witnessing extraordinary determination on a daily basis.

I strongly believe in the motto ‘work hard play harder’ and have a yearning for adrenaline packed pursuits. Hence in April 2011, I completed the accelerated free fall skydiving qualification in California. In August 2011, I then travelled to Spain to complete a further formation skydiving qualification.

Unfortunately, during this trip, I encountered strong winds and a six-foot metal fence, resulting in multiple fractures to the left femur and right tibia (I broke both of my legs). I then found myself in a surreal situation, alongside my patients in military rehab at Headley Court.

Adopting my now fellow patients’ positive attitudes, I will be entering the Bolton Ironman in July 2012, this will help aid my recovery and ultimately raise money for Help for Heroes.

The reason I’ve chosen to fundraise for Help for Heroes is a simple one, having been a patient I’ve had first-hand experience in seeing what a difference this charity makes to our injured troops. The facilities they provide for rehabilitation are second to none, in particular the state of the art pool which aided my recovery as I was unable to fully weight bear. It was this rehab that first introduced me to swimming, as time went on and I became stronger, I swam greater distance and was introduced to open water swimming.

I completed my first open water swimming competition in Eton in May 2012, a distance of just 750m which was tiring. Having just completed a 1.2 mile swim at the half Ironman Cotswold 113 in June 2012, I’m hopeful that with three weeks to go I’ll be able to complete the 2.4 mile open water swim in Pennington Flash for Bolton Ironman 2012.
