However, because I attended the free NHS health check that I had been invited to after turning 40, my PSA level was flagged as being slightly raised. This triggered the months of tests that followed, which in turn led to my early diagnosis and effectively saved my life.
In February 2018 I had surgery - a radical prostatectomy - to rid me of the offending gland and, after months of recovery, I now find myself running again and almost back to my pre-surgery level of fitness.
Prostate Cancer UK provided me with some invaluable help and advice over the last year, helping me to make sense of the treatment options available to me and to come to terms with the potential long term impact of my cancer.
So I'm running the Virgin Money London Marathon in 2019 to raise money for this fantastic charity; to help other men to get an early diagnosis, like I did; to raise awareness of prostate cancer amongst men in their 40s and 50s and to encourage anyone who is invited to a free NHS health check to go to it.
