This October, we will be taking part in the Great South Run. A 10 mile course around the streets of Portsmouth - a huge challenge for us. What would make us commit to doing 10 miles as a first ever competitive run? Two reasons............named Matthew and Elliott!
Matthew and Elliott were both diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 2. Both boys (now aged 6 & 7) have to live every day balancing their blood sugars using an insulin pump, which they wear 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They endure multiple blood glucose tests every day, cannula changes several times a week, as well as coping with the numerous episodes of high and low blood sugars. And they do all of this without complaining, coping with a regime that many adults would find hard. They also both have other health issues that are linked to Type 1 diabetes meaning that their daily lives are always a challenge.
Type 1 (or juvenile) diabetes is an autoimmune condition. It is not caused by lifestyle or diet, and is incurable. The only way of controlling Type 1 diabetes is to replace the insulin that the pancreas can no longer produce. Unless it is controlled well, it can cause many other health complications.
Diabetes UK provide vital support to both those diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and their famililes. A large part of their fundraising this year will go towards essential research into a vaccine for Type 1 Diabetes, and into providing more events to help those living with the condition.
Please help us to raise as much money as we can for this vital work, that hopefully will mean an end to Type 1 Diabetes!
