We help the brain tumour community to feel less alone and more in control

Story

Hello my name is Rion and I am a 5 year old Appaloosa x Welsh Cob. Rob (my rider) has lived in Burley most of his life and is a forty- something New Forest Commoner :o)  Our aim was to complete a 75 mile sponsored ride, which took  place on the 11th May 2010.

Well I am happy to report that we have now completed the challenge in a record breaking time no less!!

A fantastic time was had by all, but it wasn't easy, the going was very difficult at times.

Day 1 - set off from Tregoyd Farm at 10am. Got lost within first 1/4 hour in
woods, but then managed to negotiate our way along bridleways, roads and
then finally a hill over to the next stop, New House Farm, arriving at 1am.
A very warm welcome despite arriving about 2 hours before they expected
us!!

Day 2 - set off about 9:45.Went  up over the hill and met up with some of the
support crew at a Craft Centre. Arrived at the next place
Cilhowey where we got another warm welcome, complete with pre-ordered drinks for the riders!. Horses went out in the fields for a well deserved rest.

Day 3 - set off just before 10 again and agreed to meet support crew in the
middle of Brecon, which we had to ride right through.
A lot of roadwork today, with a few bridleways and got to The
Wern about 2pm.

Day 4 - set off very quickly today!  Beautiful riding, probably the best, all along the top of a
hill around a large lake.  Met up with the support at a lovely viewpoint
about half way about lunchtime, and then we made our way back to
Tregoyd where we were met with a champagne reception!

Thank you to everyone who donated online and via other methods. We are still counting, and will update the final total as soon as possible.

We also did street collections in Brockenhurst, Lymington and Ringwood and raised £550 over the three days. Lots of people came along and said hello, gave me a pat and I had lots of treats given to me! They were fun days and I was on my best behaviour! My friend Terry who was Charlotte's much loved pony came along too.

Waitrose as part of their "Community Matters"  raised money for Charlotte for the month of Feb and they have just given us a cheque for £523. Thank you to all those customers of Waitrose who put their tokens in the correct pot!... namely ours!!

Thanks as well to all the customers of Scats Countrystore and Aivly's who also gave us their small change in the charity buckets!

Let's not forget why we did this ride...We are trying to raise money for our charity. Charlotte's I believe I can Fund of Hope. Charlotte was a beautiful young girl who lived with her family in the New Forest in Hampshire. She loved horses and ponies and was a kind and accomplished young horsewoman.

Tragically she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in May 2007.

Charlotte humbled us all with her amazing courage. It was her wish that the I believe I can Fund of Hope was set up to raise money for Brain Tumour Research and Translational Medicine at the University of Portsmouth, supported by the Brainstrust.

Sadly Charlotte lost her brave battle to live in April 2008, just one month before her 17th birthday. Monies raised through her charity will continue to help others. This was her wish, and the one thing you learn is that you never stop looking for a cure.

Brain Tumours kill more children in the UK than any other illness.

Charlotte’s Fund of Hope is already having a significant impact. Charlotte was very keen to support neuro-oncology research at Portsmouth. Thanks to her mum, Anita, Charlotte’s dream is being achieved. Anita, Colin and Jack, Charlotte’s twin brother, fundraise tirelessly for Charlotte’s Fund of Hope and their efforts are now funding a senior research fellow at Portsmouth University.  Dr Qian An is examining variations in the way brain tumours respond to drugs. Qian says “my research will help to expand our understanding of brain tumours and ultimately provide improved management for patients with brain tumours.”
