We provide hospice care in Worcestershire to give people the best quality of life

Story

I have now completed my cycle ride from Land's End to John O Groats to raise funds for St Richard's Hospice. The trip covered a total of 1013 miles during which I used 4 cycles, destroyed one, borrowed another and purchased a third, while using a fourth folding bike for the first two days to enable a train journey to be completed. There are many tales to tell!  As you will also see, I have exceeded my target of £10,000, and I am most grateful to all of you for the generous support that I have received. I look forward to seeing just how much support for St Richard's Hospice will eventually be raised by this ride.

The new St Richard's Hospice is currently being built and is due to open for patients in the autumn. The building will include all the current free services, plus 15 specialist hospice beds which are desperately needed but not available in our area. We need to generate £2.8m annually to provide the specialist care and support for patients and families.

I arrived in John O'Groats on the 20th anniversary of my first day at Worcester Royal Infirmary.  I have also been a Governor of St Richard's for the same length of  time, and Vice Chairman for the past 7 years. During that time I have had the privilege of seeing the hospice grow from  extremely humble beginnings to the current exciting stage where we will open our new £5.25m million bedded unit in the autumn. Although I have seen huge growth in the work of the hospice, the philosophy behind the care has remained the same.  This is a total dedicated commitment to the patient and their families.

The trip has been dedicated to Desi Green MBE, a much loved district nurse, family friend and former hospice patient, who died in September last year. She touched the hearts of so many people she came into contact with. Desi's husband John was our road manager for the cycle trip, although I cycled unsupported for most of the way.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: St Richard's Hospice Foundation will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no effort or cost to you.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all of those who have given so generously and enabled the amount above to be raised. Thank you.
