Red Velvet’s Valentine Music Marathon: Thursday 14 – Friday 15 February

Cambridge music venue The Golden Hind in Milton Road is holding a 24-hour music marathon on Valentine’s Day to raise money for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity.

Red Velvet’s Valentine Music Marathon brings together forty acts from the folk music community in and around Cambridge, who will each take a turn performing on stage in a line-up that runs from 8pm on Thursday 14 February through to 8pm the next day.

The event is being organised by singer Deirdre Murphy and musician Les Ray, who will be performing there as folk duo ‘Red Velvet’.

Deirdre was diagnosed with lymphoma in March 2011 and carried on working as the Head teacher at Harrowden Middle School in Bedford, while she was treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital. She is very grateful for the ‘first class’ care she received at the oncology department, along with the enormous strength and encouragement she gained from her colleagues, students and their parents. She continued to sing alongside Les in Red Velvet throughout her cancer and feels that this also helped her to cope with her treatment and recovery.

Deirdre’s cancer has now been in remission since August 2011. Following a conversation with fellow musician Greg Camburn, who is the CEO of Helen Rollason Cancer Charity, Deirdre and Les decided to organise this fundraising event. Deirdre explained: “Les and I want to give something back for all of the care and support that I have received. Red Velvet’s Valentine Music Marathon combines my love of music with raising money for this worthwhile cause.”
