Thanks for taking the time to visit SERVE's JustGiving Appeal page. Typhoon Haiyan - one of the most powerful storms on record to make landfall - swept through six central Philippine islands on Friday, 8th November. It brought sustained winds of 235km/h (147mph), with gusts of 275 km/h (170 mph), with waves as high as 15m (45ft), bringing up to 400mm (15.75 inches) of rain in places. Officials estimate up to 10,000 people have died in Tacloban city and hundreds elsewhere. Hundreds of thousands of people are displaced.
Tacloban is on the east coast across the island. Communication is very difficult and there is just one cell site in Tacloban which started operating earlier today. On the island of Leyte alone it is estimated that 10,000 are dead. A kilometer wide stretch of houses along the coast completely wiped out.
SERVE has worked in partnership with the Redemptorists and Presentation Sisters in the Philippines since 2003, and had placed volunteers in Tacloban in 2003 and 2004. Currently in the Redemptorist church in Tacloban there are 2,000 evacuees in the church and monastery. They are running out of supplies. They need food, antibiotics, water and surgical masks.
