Why are we doing this?!?
Many of you will remember the Ummah United Snowdon Trek that took place in June 2009, set up in response to this Islamic Help appeal in aid of Darul Fadilah in Gaza. It may seem like a long time ago but in reality it's only been a year-and-a-half since we climbed Mount Snowdon, and now Ummah United are back to take on the biggest mountain in the world, climbing many other peaks along the way, all to raise funds for the people of Palestine, insha-Allah.
The big blow
At 0300 on 12th January 2009, Darul Fadilah (House of Virtue) in Rafah, Gaza, was bombed by 7 Israeli missiles, which pulverised this once magnificent building.
Darul Fadilah was a home and school for 500 orphan boys and girls, some as young as 4 and a masjid which catered for over 2000 people and conducted a programme where 4,000 children memorised the Qur’an. It was a training and community centre, providing a valuable service to the thousands of women in the area, and a medical centre which provided primary medical care for the locals.
In a nutshell, it was a huge asset to the Palestinian community of Rafah and, like so many other things, one that was taken from them by brute force.
The big news
Alhumdu-lillah, the project has made a lot of progress as you can see from this video, but Darul Fadilah and the people of Gaza still need our support. Insha-Allah, after months of planning the Everest challenge has been confirmed and all proceeds will be put towards this great project. It's going to cost £2.5million in all, so there's a lot of fundraising and work to be done!
