In memory of Mel Baker

50km walk · 18 October 2026

St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity offering free, expert care for adults with an illness that cannot be cured, and support for their loved ones and carers. Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,000 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

Story

We as a family, Sabrina, Gary, Jay and Liam are taking on another challenge for St Richards Hospice in memory of Mel, Gary’s sister.

25th March 2026 would have been Mel’s 50th Birthday, so we have decided to honour Mel by doing a 50km walk on Sunday 18th October. The route will begin at St Richard’s Hospice Shop in Kidderminster, walking to a St Richard’s Hospice Shop in Worcester, then walking to St Richard’s Hospice Shop in Malvern and then the final leg of the walk will be to St Richard’s Hospice at Wildwood Way.

This will mark our 12th annual Charity event, which began when Jay was 7, he had a talk at primary school from St Richards, where they spoke about the importance of raising funds and he decided he wanted to do something to make a difference. Jay’s first challenge was a 2 hour sponsored silence. Challenges have included, swims, runs, wearing shorts every day for a year, 24 hour darts challenge, 10 challenges in 10 hours. Challenges have either been completed by Jay, Liam, or as a family.

Mel is missed so much every day, and this is our way of remembering her and also thanking St Richards Hospice for everything they did to look after Mel and the family in her final weeks.

27th December 2026 will mark 12 years since we lost Mel, every day she is thought of and remembered fondly!
