We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

Marie Curie is here for anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, and those close to them. Whatever the illness, wherever you are, we’re with you to the end. We bring 75 years of experience and leading research to the care we give you at home, in our hospices and over the phone. And we push for a better end of life for all by campaigning and sharing research to change the system. Marie Curie is a charity working across the UK and we need your support to do our vital work.

The Oxfordshire STARS are working to help raise money for Marie Curie. If you want to keep in touch do email oxfordshire.stars@gmail.com and we'll add you to our mailing list or sign up to:

Trek Transylvania (Romania) for Marie Curie – 3rd to 9th September 2024

Some of our amazing team are fundraising to take part in Trek Transylvanian. This amazing seven day adventure will involve walking up to 10 miles per day. During the trip they will explore the dramatic landscapes and unspoilt natural valleys of the Carpathian mountains. They will experience the history, myth, intrigue and the magic of the wonderful Bran Castle, absorb themselves in the scenery of remote medieval village, watch bears feeding in the local bear sanctuary and go truffle hunting with dogs. Each participant pays an initial registration fee of £395 and then pledges to fundraise or obtain sponsorship of £2600. Some of our participants are paying all of the trip costs themselves and pledging to raise as much as they can on top! What STARS they are! Supporting those with a terminal illness is important as sadly we will all know someone who will experience a critical illness on our journey through life. For more information please contact Nicky Clargo on 07754 271831 email: oxfordshire.stars@gmail.com

Participants signed up so far: Nicky Clargo, Chris Rawlings, Bernie Harris, Jill May, Sharron Chadwick, Jane Simpkins, Keith Sykes and Steve Dance. If you are supporting a STARS Trekker kindly include their name in your donation so we know who you are supporting. Thank you! ;o)

Cambridgeshire Trek for Marie Curie Friday 3rd to Monday 6th May 2024

Our spring trek will include four days walking in the beautiful area of Cambridgeshire. The event includes three nights bed, breakfast, evening meals and mini bus travel. You will be immersed in walks which will include the beautiful University City of Cambridge with its interesting old buildings, amazing architecture and fascinating history. You’ll walk through several stunningly beautiful villages and towns such as Huntingdon, Oundle, Stamford, Exton, Ely and St Ives. Some of which are noted to be the prettiest places in Cambridge. There will also be a chance to explore Ely Cathedral, Houghton Mill and Stamford which is described as one of the finest ‘stone towns’ in England. Each participant will pay 100% of the trek costs themselves and pledge to raise a minimum of £45 for Marie Curie. It's a truly wonderful itinerary with so much to see and do; they won't be disappointed! ;o) For the itinerary and to book your place please contact Nicky Clargo on 07754 271831 email: oxfordshire.stars@gmail.com

So why a Cancer Charity?

Well... Like many of us have, or will do at some point, I have experienced a great deal of bereavement and loss in my family due to cancer related illnesses. My Dad sadly died when I was 23, he was just 45 years old. My Mum died when I was 28, she was 48 years old. Six weeks after we lost my Mum, my Nan died aged 72. Fourteen months later my Aunt died aged just 44. Seven months later my Grandfather died aged 72.

As you can see my family was completely striped by this terrible illness. Ten years ago my Sister, was also diagnosed with cancer, but I am delighted to say that she is lucky enough to be in remission and still with us today! However, over the past few years I have lost several very dear friends to cancer and every year I hear of someone else who starts their own battle with this terrible disease. All of this has pushed me to want to raise funds and help those families who will benefit from the love and support they will receive from Marie Curie.

I know I am not alone in my experiences as many people will lose or will have already lost someone dear to them through this illness.

That's what makes the Oxfordshire STARS team so very special and why great new friendships have been formed to become part of this amazing little team. So THANK YOU for caring and THANK YOU for supporting our events.
