Story

Can you spare £7.30 to help us out?

We are the proud keepers of the historic Maryhill Burgh Halls in the heart of our community. The halls were rescued from demolition by a passionate group of local residents back in 2004 and from this, Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust was formed. Together, we dramatically reimagined and restored the building as a vibrant hub for Maryhill. We've made it our mission to continue to care for the Halls, but as a small, independent charity, we need your support more than ever, to continue providing this vital space.

The Burgh Halls mean more to us than just bricks and mortar - they are a source of identity, pride and belonging and rich in history of the area. As one of our neighbours shared, "It's great to keep the history of Maryhill alive." Another said, "I like to pop in and just see what's on." In an area facing severe deprivation, we provide an accessible place to come together, connect with roots, explore creativity, and find respite.

Over the years, the Halls have evolved to house the Maryhill Museum, celebrating our local heritage. We host temporary art shows & exhibitions that inspire and produce community events that uplift. Our new in-house Nolly Café has quickly become a local gathering place. We provide affordable spaces for local businesses to thrive – among them, a children’s music school, a nursery, local architect and recording studios. And our free guided walking tours introduce visitors to the rich history found on Maryhill's streets.

However, after over a decade of constant use by thousands of visitors, tenants, and community members, the Burgh Halls are starting to show their age. Maintenance costs are mounting as we continue to work to preserve this historic treasure. And in this current cost of living crisis, we face higher than expected costs to operate the Halls.

Recently, we had to spend £66,000 on an urgent replacement of the building's ageing boiler system. This unexpected major expense stretched our modest budget to its limits. Our other costs for keeping the lights on and running the building have increased by around £30,000 last year over what we expected to spend. Other priority repairs and upgrades loom on the horizon, from replacing the sprung Hall floor to repairing the windows.

We are proud to be a community-led charity, but it also means we must sometimes rely on our community too. It can be really difficult and humbling to ask for help, but we need to ask for your support right now.

If the Burgh Halls has helped you, please help us. Absolutely any size of donation is appreciated as every penny really does count. We know that times are tight for everyone, but if you can spare it, even a one-time donation of £𝟳.𝟯𝟬 would be a great help. This works out at 2𝘱 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘺, for a year, so if you think our work to keep the Halls open is worth 2p a day, please donate today.

Your donation will allow us to fund critical maintenance and renovations required to future-proof our building and preserve Maryhill Burgh Halls for subsequent generations to enjoy and benefit from.

As well as donating, there are plenty of other ways you can support us.
