Story

I'm gearing up for one of the biggest challenges of my life - I'm set to tackle the towering heights of Kilimanjaro, the biggest mountain in Africa! But why, you may ask, would I willingly subject myself to such a challenge?

I'm using this opportunity to raise funds for Rowcroft Hospice, a charity that's so close to my heart. There are many formidable challenges facing the hospice, including the tough economic climate that has impacted our fundraising and retail operations, the rising costs of living, and the increasing pressures on the hospice’s services that stem from a rising demand from our ageing local population. So I wanted to do my bit and offer my support and solidarity. Every penny counts. Plus, it's a chance to shed light on the incredible work done by the teams at Rowcroft in providing vital care and support to those in need.

So, what exactly does this challenge entail? Well, it's no walk in a Tanzanian park, that's for sure. Over the course of five or six gruelling days, we'll be navigating our way up and down the 5,895-meter giant that is Kilimanjaro, all while grappling with altitude, rocky terrain, and fluctuating temperatures. Hot in the day and freezing cold at night.

But I'm no stranger to a challenge. Sure, I've got a dodgy back at the moment, but I'm powering through! And with plenty of hydration, I'm feeling optimistic about what lies ahead.

As for the journey itself, we'll be staying in basic huts along the way, with sherpas to guide us and take care of the logistics. And while the downhill descent may pose its own set of challenges (hello, sore knees!), I'm ready to take it one step at a time, quite literally.

Of course, there's always the unknown factor when it comes to altitude sickness and physical fitness. But with an 85% success rate for our chosen route, and with plenty of preparatory hilly hikes up and down the South West coast path, I'm feeling pretty good about our odds.

So, as I gear up for this epic adventure, I invite you to join me on this journey, whether it's through your support, your well-wishes, or perhaps even a donation to Rowcroft Hospice. Together, we can make a difference and show that even the tallest mountains can be conquered when we come together for a cause.

Thanks for being a part of this incredible journey with me.

Please note that I’ll be personally funding this challenge so that all money raised in sponsorship will go directly to support the hospice.
