Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Chapter2 is a local charity doing a sterling job helping to meet an unmet need. From the charity: 'In Reading and the surrounding areas, there are approximately 100,000 boys. By the time these boys are 15 years of age, roughly 1 in 2 of them will not be living with both parents. The vast majority will be living with their mother and risk losing contact with their father. These boys will grow up to face far more challenges than your average boy. Behavioural issues, poor academic achievement, unemployment, poor mental health and other chronic illness, involvement in crime and poverty later in life are all far more likely for fatherless boys.' The idea is simple enough: Chapter2 recruit and train men who volunteer to regularly meet up with a boy with no father figure in his life, in order to guide and mentor him.
Chapter2 take referrals mainly from social services and they have a growing waiting list of boys in Reading who have no contact with their dad and desperately need a male mentor to help them negotiate their formative years. And to continue to do what they do and to cover their running costs, donations are vitally important.
So on August 18th 2023, my teenage boys (Tom, 18 and James, 15) and I will be setting out to walk the 177+ mile (slightly more with detours for food) Offa's Dyke national trail along the England/Wales border over 13 days. We will be mostly camping along the way, so carrying all our gear. We start on the cliffs above the Severn estuary just outside Chepstow and finish on the shores of the Irish Sea at Prestatyn.
Our ultimate challenge is to raise £2000 for Chapter2 - we invite you to sponsor us and support them as they seek to bring a bit of hope into the lives of young boys in need of a positive male role model in their lives.
