Story
I’m taking on a trek in the largest hot desert on earth!
In March 2024, I’ll be travelling to the Sahara for a desert trek in support of Havens Hospices, a charity very close to my heart.
As a nurse at Fair Havens, I see the incredible work the charity does every single day, so now it’s my turn to play a part in the fundraising effort to support the hospice.
I signed up as it’s something I have never done before, so I feel nervous and excited at the same time. My friends and family think I’m mad, but they always support me in my adventures, especially if it’s for a good cause.
I love working at Fair Havens. We walk with patients and their families through some of life’s most difficult moments. Many people think that hospice nursing is just about sitting with a patient during their dying days, but this job has much more depth and meaning than that. We seek to help patients live life to its fullest during those remaining days.
We will spend three days trekking in the Moroccan Sahara across sand dunes, dried-up river beds and sun-baked plains. It’s going to be hot, with temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees. At night we will be camping in the desert under the stars (there are no showers, so we have been told to take baby wipes!)
After the trek, we spend two days assisting at a local community project, decorating, refurbishing, gardening, and generally working to improve the environment.
This will be a really tough experience but worth every step, and what will motivate me on the long hot walks is raising money for the hospice I love. If you can spare any money please do sponsor me for this once-in-a-lifetime challenge.
