Story

On 21st May, we were given the difficult news that I have breast cancer, following tests and investigations over the preceding month.

My prognosis is good and we are all very positive that I will make a full recovery following surgery and treatment over the next few months.

My investigations and diagnosis were given at the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven, an amazing facility, working along side the NHS, but built entirely as the result of fundraising. I cannot sing their praises highly enough in terms of the support, care, and the general overall environment that has been created to support those going through this challenging time.

I am at the start of my cancer journey and know that there will be many tough times ahead, but knowing that the unit, facilities and staff (and my amazing family and friends!) will support me through both my treatment, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with it, make it so much easier to deal with. I cannot say thank you enough for what the unit has done so far and has already provided to support both me and my family.

From their website (https://www.worcsbreastunithaven.com/):

"We are an independent charity, entirely reliant on fundraising and grants from local Trusts. In order for Worcestershire Breast Unit charity to exist and meet the needs of local people, we need to raise in excess of £200,000 a year."

Whilst I am still feeling well enough to make a positive difference for others who find themselves in this situation in the future, my aim is to try and raise just 1% of this amount before I undergo surgery at the end of June and start my treatment.

I've set myself the target to run (or walk, if necessary...) 100km between now and my surgery. I am not a runner by nature, but have built myself up to running about 4-5km a few times a week since the start of the year.

The aim will be to achieve this on roughly 20 days over the next month before my op.

Assuming that my overall health, lack of injuries and energy levels (plus some reasonable weather!) allow me to reach this target, I hope that enough people feel able to support me in supporting this amazing facility/charity and donating, so that it can continue making such a positive difference for people who find themselves in my situation.

Thank you in advance for any donation you feel able to make, no matter how big or small xx

23rd June update:

I continue to receive outstanding care and support from the Haven unit.

Op is on 27th June and I need something new to aim for, and a focus to help keep raising funds for this amazing charity!

Hoping to get back to running before the end of the summer, but initially plan to get out for walks to keep myself fit and positive after surgery and during treatment.

Radiotherapy is likely to be finished by the end of September, so I plan to cover (probably mainly walking!) a total of 400km before then. This means roughly 20-25km a week, which is hopefully realistic.

Any extra support gratefully received xx

August update:

Two surgeries on (and many more visits to the fantastic Haven unit!), I am starting to get back to more short, gentle runs.

Radiotherapy is likely to start in the week beginning 16th September.

To spur me on to get back to fitness, cover the km and raise more money, I have entered the Worcester 10km run on 15th September.

I can do this!
