Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page!
My name is Hayley and I am 32 years old - In a moment of madness I had a crazy idea I was going to run the London Marathon. After entering the ballot, I decided that if I was going to take on the ordeal of running a marathon that I would love do it for a cause close to my heart.
My life was turned upside down in December 2021, when I lost my Dad to a rare form of cancer which had metastasis from his gall bladder. He had gone through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, multiple stents and an abandoned surgery before we were given the crushing blow that he only had around 6-12 months to live.
Unfortunately, as with these estimates, it proved to be incorrect and he passed away peacefully in Sue Ryder’s St John’s Hospice only a few months later.
Sue Ryder provided a compassionate and kind service throughout this whole process, from ringing their phone lines in utter panic when something changed, to the services that were offered to be after his passing. Every single member of staff I encountered was compassionate, dedicated and kind.
I have written this out a few times but I cannot find the words to describe how important their role was in making sure my Dad’s passing was peaceful and dignified.
In a second devastating blow, my Mum passed away 7 months later in the following July, although this didn’t directly involve Sue Ryder, they continued to offer me ongoing support and care.
Sue Ryder campaign for better care, funding and support for those suffering from terminal illness, on palliative care and ongoing support for those grieving. Although this is a very broad spectrum of areas to cover, they value each area as an essential part of their values.
On average, 9 people are left bereaved from every death – 70% of these cannot access the support they need. With an average death rate of approximately 11,000 per week, this means a lot of people who are not able to access the support that they so badly need to continue.
