Story
Thank you for visiting my page.
Fifteen years go, my wife Susan and I sat in the office of her oncologist at the Beatson Hospital to be given the devastating news that the lump on her right wrist was in fact sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Her treatment would begin immediately with 2 months of chemotherapy, followed by removal of the tumour and her wrist and lower arm bone, to be replaced with a metal rod and bone grafts. Her fibula would be removed to create this new bone.
The consultant advised us that all being well a 70% survival rate after 5 years was anticipated, due to the early detection of the cancer.
He also asked Susan to tell him 3 things she would want to see and do in the future. Her answers were as follows.
1. We wish to retire to Spain
2. I want to be able to continue to tap dance.
3. To see grandchildren should we be lucky enough to have them.
In 2018 we retired to Spain and Susan has been tap dancing since we arrived. Last month our son Calum and his wife Gemma, gave us our first grandchild, a beautiful baby girl, Cara Florence.
So for us our Sarcoma circle has finally been closed, however for the lives of many others and their families the fight goes on.
In honour of this I am cycling from Paris to London over 4 days in May, then on Day 5 I will be cycling the Ride London event, a further 100 miles.
Our son Calum will be joining me on the UK legs of this ride, whilst my best friend Richard and my daughter Hayley and son in law Jonny will be providing vehicle support in France and the UK.
I am raising funds for Sarcoma UK to help support others on their own journey, fighting to beat this little known but deadly cancer.
I thank you in advance for your support
David
