John O Groats to Lands End Cycle Challenge, 4 July 2024

Story

On the 4th July 2024 I am doing a charity bike ride from John O Groats to Lands End, approximately 1000 miles over 9 days of cycling to raise money for research and awareness in Blood Cancer. In particular the MPN Voice charity which helps support people living with cancer and research in finding a cure.

I was diagnosed myself with a very rare form of blood cancer called “Polycythaemia Vera (PV)” back in August 2023 which was a major shock for myself and family. The first thing I said to my consultant was “how long do I have left?”

After my consultant explained things to me if my treatment works then I can lead a normal life. He gave me a booklet on MPN and pointed me in the direction of MPN Voice for support and advice.

I have a JAK2 mutation which makes my body over produce red blood cells. So in time if this is not treated I will have a blood clot which will lead to a stroke, heart attack and many more complications.

At present my treatment is working and my consultant and nurses at Riva House Carlisle are taking great care of me and keeping me here for a bit longer. So with your kind donations we can raise money to help people living with cancer and research in finding a cure.

About the charity

MPN Voice leads the way in supporting people with rare blood cancers called Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), with accurate information and emotional support. We're funding research toward better treatments and one day a cure. Most importantly we offer hope to those affected by MPNs.
