Story
As far back as I can remember, I've often struggled with my mental health. As a result of a difficult childhood, I've struggled with depression, burn out, low self-esteem and severe social anxiety. And although I'm doing better now thanks to therapy (among other things), it's not easy everyday.
Throughout the tough times, cycling has been one of the things that kept me going. That gave me some control and autonomy over my life, and helped me believe I could get better. When my mental health started improving, and I started actively working out for the first time in about 6 years, it was with cycling classes and swapping the bus for a bike on the commute to work.
I've been lucky to be surrounded by supportive friends and family that helped me navigate the darkest times. I'm aware this is a privilege that not everyone has. As I'm embarking on the biggest physical challenge of my life so far, I also want to make it count for those who need help with their mental health.
To further this goal, I'm trying to raise £5 for each mile cycled in aid of Mind, one of the leading mental health charities in the UK, supporting hundreds of thousands of people each year.
