Story

Help Me Row to Victory Against Skin Cancer

I’m Kyle, and I’m about to embark on one of the most extraordinary adventures imaginable. As a redhead, I face a heightened risk of skin cancer due to a genetic variant in the Melanocortin-1 Receptor (MC1R). This November, I will set off on a solo, non-stop, and unsupported row across the Atlantic Ocean —from Morocco to Miami— a feat that has never been achieved before.

This journey is not just a test of physical endurance but a monumental challenge that pushes the limits of human capability. I’ll be covering an awe-inspiring 4000 miles, battling the unpredictable Atlantic waters, and facing conditions that are as grueling as they are exhilarating. Over the course of approximately four months at sea, I’ll be contending with waves that can reach over 40ft high, severe sleep deprivation, and complete isolation. Each day will demand more than 12 hours of rowing, resulting in over 2 million oar strokes and an estimated weight loss of 12-18kg despite consuming more than 6,000 calories daily.

This adventure is as much about overcoming personal limits as it is about making a difference. The Atlantic is one of the world's most challenging environments, and few have attempted such a daunting solo row. In fact, more people have been into space or have summited Everest than have rowed any ocean solo. It’s a truly extraordinary undertaking, and it’s not without its dangers —navigating shark-infested waters and international shipping lanes will become part of my daily routine.

My motivation for this epic row is deeply personal. In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Grandad Michael was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma, a battle he tragically lost just two weeks later. To honour his memory —and all those link him— I am undertaking this colossal challenge to raise crucial awareness for skin cancer and support The British Skin Foundation’s vital work in research, education and early detection.

The British Skin Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by skin diseases and conditions. They fund essential research into skin cancer, support dermatological studies, and raise public awareness about skin health. Their efforts include providing educational resources, with the goal of advancing understanding and treatments for skin conditions. By supporting my row, you are contributing directly to these important initiatives.

With 15,400 new cases of Melanoma diagnosed annually in the UK alone, my journey is a powerful call to action. I hope to spotlight the critical need for early detection and advocate for reclassifying sunscreen as an essential healthcare product by removing VAT, rather than treating it as a luxury item.

Join me on this monumental journey as I row not just for personal glory, but to inspire change and spark a global conversation on skin cancer prevention and treatment. Follow my progress (@TheOARburnRower), be inspired by the challenge, and contribute to The British Skin Foundation to support a future where early detection saves lives and memories of loved ones are preserved.

Support my mission today and help make waves in the fight against skin cancer.
