Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page in aid of Prostate Cancer UK
On the 20th May I will be taking part in the 2018 Cape Wrath Ultra – it is an extreme event and the hardest physical challenge I have ever undertaken! Those of you that know me well, know I regularly run marathons (26m) and Ultra Marathons (50-100m) – however the Cape Wrath Ultra is my first attempt to complete a long multiday event.
Cape Wrath Ultra is an 8-day expedition race through 400km of the Scottish Highlands. Starting in Fort William - it will be an incredibly challenging, remote but beautiful journey to the furthest north-westerly point of the British Isles, Cape Wrath. Surrounded by towering mountains on one side and the crashing ocean on the other – the route will take myself and 249 participants through stunning scenery and wilderness with every step north.
I do not underestimate both the physical and mental challenge this will be, with Italy's Ita Emanuela Marzotto the 2016 ladies’ winner saying “This race is the hardest thing I’ve done, harder than the 10 day race in Australia or the Marathon Des Sables." - I know it won’t be an easy challenge!
And this is why I want to dedicate this race and any funds I can raise to Prostate Cancer UK and a good friend who I have recently seen effected by this illness.
Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.
Please give as much as you can spare for this great cause.
If you would like to know more about the challenge please read on.
The 400kms will be completed in 8 days and will be massive test of physical endurance and mental strength.. It is ultimately a running race - typically I would run an off-road marathon in 3 ½ hours, however due to the terrain in the Scottish Highlands it will take 5-6 hours to cover the same distance alone. My days will begin at 5:30am for breakfast before I head out into the wilderness to tackle miles of peat bogs, river crossings and mountain passes to complete:
- 400km / 248 miles - the equivalent distance of running from London to Amsterdam…and once more around the block!
- Average daily distance 50km / 31miles – more than a marathon a day for 8 days straight!
- 11,200 total height climbed
- Average daily height of 1,400m – which is the equivalent of climbing Ben Nevis every day!
- Over 100 river crossings
- 20% trackless routes
- Self-navigate through 400km - for those of you that know me know I can get lost in my own house!
- Being rewarded every night, with a hearty vegetarian meal (!!), a wash in the nearest river and sharing a tent made for eight!
Thank you for taking the time to read about the journey I am soon to embark upon and I hope that that you can support me by making a donation, no matter how small or big to Prostate Cancer UK.
