Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
As part of our 2013/2014 adventure, we are visiting a brilliant project in Zambia called Wukwashi Wa Nzambi (Wukwashi), which is a partner of the UK-based charity, BCT (www.bethanychildrenstrust.org.uk). We met Susie Howe (the founder and Director of BCT) in 2012 and both felt that the amount she and her partners had been able to achieve was phenomenal. We wanted to help in whatever way we could.
In Jan/Feb 2014, we will be visiting Wukwashi, and will be volunteering alongside the locals who run the project. This project has been set up to enable children with disability to live full and fulfilling lives, to tackle the stigma of disability and to rehabilitate and re-integrate mentally and physically impaired children into their communities.
You're probably wondering, how will your donation count? Well, you can rest assured that ALL the money we raise will be going directly to helping Wukwashi. The difference between this project and some of the larger aid agencies you may be familiar with, is that Wukwashi empowers local people to help themselves, rather than promoting a cycle of dependency. Parents of children living with disability are taught physiotherapy techniques to enhance their children’s mobility and abilities, and given lots of advice, teaching and support through local Wukwashi support groups. The children are given access to life-changing medical care, surgery and prosthetic aids. Above all, they are given love and recognition and valued as individuals.
Your donations will be used to buy items which we are taking which are difficult to source locally, such as certain food supplements and sanitary items. It will also go towards purchasing wheelchairs from a local manufacturer, thereby helping the wider economy, and a grinding mill to generate income for the work of Wukwashi.
Your donations WILL make a difference. To see how, please follow our blog...
Thank you for your generosity.
