Story

WELCOME TO MY NOAH'S ARK APPEAL FUNDRAISING PAGE!

In April of 2012, I will be taking part in a 50km trek along the Great Wall of China to raise essential funds for the Noah's Ark Appeal, a charity raising money for the new Children’s Hospital for Wales. In addition to friends and family, I am also being supported by the school in which I work, which has made the Noah's Ark Appeal their 'charity of the year'.

My son has been a regular patient at the University Hospital since he was born, so this is a charity is close to our hearts. To know that your child is receiving the best possible care, using the best possible equipment, is crucial.  To have a sick child can also have a devastating effect on the family; the accomodation, facilities and support that charities like the Noahs' Ark Appeal help to provide can hold families together at the time when they need it most.

The new Children's Hospital for Wales is based on the site of the University Hospital for Wales in Cardiff.  Phase 1, opened in 2005, included four themed wards (two medical and two oncology) , a lounge and internet cafe for teenagers, playrooms for younger children and purpose built facilities for families.  Phase 2 is already underway and will include a new critical care unit, paediatric operating theatres, a radiology suite, a new outpatient department and a garden. While the Welsh Government will finance the main building work, the funding will not be sufficient to pay for much of the specialist equipment needed.

The Noah’s Ark Appeal is currently raising funds for a new hydrotherapy pool, expected to cost in the region of £500,000. The pool will be used by children with a wide range of conditions, including head or spinal injuries, strokes or cancer.  At the moment, children use the adult hydrotherapy pool which is not only a long way from the children’s unit, but is also only available for one hour each week.

Please sponsor me if you can - no matter how small the amount. The money will help to provide the facilities and equipment needed to make the new Children's Hospital for Wales among the best in the world.

Thank you!
