Story

FOLLOWING ON FROM THE MAGNIFICENT EFFORT OF OUR CYCLING TEAM WHICH KICK-STARTED OUR APPEAL, WE ARE KEEPING THIS PAGE OPEN FOR FURTHER DONATIONS.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

Amyloidosis is a rare and life-threatening disease caused by abnormal deposition and accumulation of proteins in the tissues of the body.  Early diagnosis is essential and we hope this cycling challenge will help to create a “ribbon of awareness” from one end of the UK to the other.

On the 6 July 2014 a team comprising staff and patients from the UK National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC), led by John Plant (patient), Thirusha Lane (Lead Nurse) and David Hutt (Lead Nuclear Medicine Technician), will be cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats to help raise funds towards the purchase of an MRI scanner.  This epic challenge will cover 977 miles, climbing 50,300 feet (almost twice the height of Mount Everest), arriving in John O’Groats 14 days later on the 19 July.

We have made great progress in developing new MRI techniques to specifically diagnose and quantify amyloid deposits non-invasively, crucially including amyloid within the heart, which has not been possible previously.  Our patients have to travel to another centre to undergo MRI assessments and we wish to greatly reduce the burden of this travel, and the waiting time involved, by creating our own MRI facility.
