Story
Finlay was born on 10th Feburary 2013. He was an undiagnosed Breech and he had his head wedged under my ribs for the last 20 weeks of my pregnancy. Due to this he was born with Severe Plageocephaly (Flattening to the side of his head - or as you may know it as Flat Head Syndrome). We were advised through the NHS that his head 'should' remould back into the correct position over the next few months. However after almost 5 months of repositioning and cranial osteopathy - His head still remains flat and due to the unusual moulding of his plates, his ears and eyes are not in line. After little advice from our Health visitor and GP we decided to go for a free assessment at Technology in Motion a specialist helmet provider who treat Plagiocephaly. They advised us that Fin was had severe Plagiocephaly at 18mm and mild Brachycephaly at 84%. This was after almost 5 months of repositioning and osteopathy.
We have therefore decided to opt for Helmet treatment, but this is not avaliable on the NHS as they deem the condition to be only cosmetic. However the problems associated with plagiocephaly include: dental and speech problems due to jaw misalignment, visual and hearing problems and the social implications of having distorted features. There is also early research to link plagiocephaly to learnings difficulties in early childhood.
Due to this treatment not being avaliable on the NHS we have had to go private at a cost of £1950. Finlay will be having his Helmet fitted at the end of this week (26th July) and hopefully will only need it for 4 months.
This is why we have put together this page to ask for your help to help raise awareness regarding the conditions Plagiocephaly and Brachycepahly to help raise the funds to cover Finlays treatment.
We are raising money alongside the charity Headstart4babies - who help familes on low incomes get the treatment they need. Money raised will help pay for Finlays treatment with any excess going straight to Headstart4babies to help other babies requiring treatment.
We hope to have raised our target within 3 months, we will keep this page updated with news and events.
if you would like to donate you can do so through this page and any amount is greatly appreciated (dont forget giftaid!). Thankyou for taking the time to read about little Finlay and all his little friends like him.
