Story
In 2015 I went out for a bike ride which didn't end quite as planned... I came off my bike when I encountered a car turning across my path and by the time I'd stopped sliding along the road I had broken my skull, jaw, teeth, sternum, 4 ribs and 3 vertebrae.
I was in the middle of nowhere in West Sussex and the people who were working for the air ambulance heard the details of the 999 call and decided that I needed their help.
The helicopter came and the crew put me in a medically-induced coma, strapped me in and off we went. Because they acted quickly, they were able to take me to King's College Hospital in London before the sun set, when they would have had to go elsewhere. (King's was important because it is the UK's leading hospital for neurosurgery...)
Of all of the individuals, teams and organisations that helped me that day and on my recovery since, the air ambulance is the one piece that's a charity. If people didn't give their money to the trust, it wouldn't exist. I hate to think what could have happened to me without them.
There are lots of things that I can't do anymore, but one thing I can still do is put one foot in front of the other to get to where I want to go - I can run! Having run for the trust in 2018, it's about time that I had another go.
