Story
Thank you for visiting the James Blunt Fans Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders fundraising page.
This site was set up on the 18th July 2006, as a way for James Blunt (Bedlamites) fans to sponsor his favourite charity organisation, Médecins Sans Frontières / Doctors Without Borders. As many of you may already know, James worked alongside the MSF during his time in Kosovo as a NATO peacekeeper during the war in 1999.
Since finding fame, James has kept a keen interest in the MSF and during his recent World Tour has openly supported it by holding charity auctions at his concerts to raise money for the organisation.
In July 2006, James was interviewed by the Dutch MSF website about his support for the MSF:
Médecins Sans Frontières is inspirational
James first saw MSF at work in 1999 when he served in Kosovo with the British military. He was one of the first military personnel from the NATO peace keeping force in the area and was very impressed by the commitment of the MSF employees.
"Without armour or weapons & w/o the enormous logistics that we had, the people of MSF offered direct medical care to the victims of the tragedy in Kosovo. It was very inspiring to see them at work."
"In the 6 months that I was in Kosovo I was very involved with all kinds of aid organisations. Most of them I saw in the cities. In the country, where aid was desparately needed, I only encountered MSF the whole time."
"Most people that would like to donate to a good cause wonder if the money really goes where it is needed. You never know for certain if it doesn't go to the costs of the organization itself. MSF was for me an example of how money is well spent, and is used in a positive way to save lives."
The support of the people is important for our work. In Kosovo's case we refused money from the NATO countries.
"What I noticed in Kosovo was that MSF didn't want any help from the army. We had our tanks to protect us, but I believe MSF had something different: the trust of the people for whom they worked. I think it is quite understandable that MSF distances itself from military aims and from the governments that carry out military actions. Otherwise, they would lose the trust of the people in the countries where they work."
How did you come up with the idea to donate money through your concerts?
"I thought it would be nice to meet people who would be excited to go backstage. That gave us the idea to organize an auction for a good cause. For me it was clear that it had to be MSF. At every concert people can now bid, and the highest bidder may come backstage. I now have the great honor of meeting people who have given quite royally to a very outstanding organization. That made it a bit nicer to meet people backstage."
What would you like to say to people who listen to your music and might also want to support MSF?
"Many of us need inspiration these days. Supporting an organization that does so much for so many people over the whole world is a very easy way to do more with your life. Whether you go work for them now or donate money, it is for yourself an inspiration, but it also means very much to other people in the world."
Please dig deep and sponsor the MSF online.
