Story
Despite my advancing years (and waistline) I have decided once again to have a bash at the Flora London Marathon in 2009. In blistering heat I managed to complete the course back in 2007 in 4hrs 58m.
I will be running in support of the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Association. PSP is a degenerative disease involving the death of selected neurons (nerve cells) in the brain. Currently there is no cure and treatment for the symptoms is limited.
My Dad sadly passed away on 27th December 2006 after a courageous battle against PSP over a number of years. The illness affected progressively his balance, mobility, vision, speech and ability to swallow.
When British born actor and musician Dudley Moore lost his fight against PSP in March 2002, many thousands of people worldwide became more aware of this little known but devastating disease. In July 2007 the broadcaster and Daily Mail journalist Nigel Dempster died of PSP. Leading neurologists consider that there could be as many as 10,000 cases of PSP in the UK today.
The work done by the PSP Association helps to support both sufferers and those who care for them. They also fund research into the illness in the hope of one day developing an effective treatment and ultimately a cure.
