Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I'm attempting a swim across the River Humber from Spurn Point on the North bank over to the South bank in the region of Cleethorpes leisure centre if all goes to plan. I am training most days in my local pool and also the Alexandra Dock in Grimsby. It is proposed my training will continue throughout the winter months to maintain fitness, increase stamina and improve my cold water endurance. I have managed to secure the services of Mr Peter Winchester, who has to be one of the most prolific Humber Swimmers of all time. Peter will be my mentor throughout the open water aspects of my endevours and has agreed to conduct my training and the swim attempt on the day.

The date for the swim is now 7th September 2013 and many considerations will have to be factored in for the swim not least the tides. Other considerations of course will be the shipping traffic on the river, sea state and weather with the ultimate decision on the swim go ahead being dictated by the local marine and rescue services.

My efforts are to raise vital funds for Macmillan cancer care who's work improves life for so many cancer sufferers and their families. I'm proud to dedicate my time in the pool, dock and eventually the Humber to acheive my fundraising goal but also in memory of my late Father Mr Willam Andrew Bird a fine man and swimmer who lost his fight against cancer some years ago. I thank all who will donate just as i thank all who will support my efforts during the training to come and the eventual swim in August 2013.

Hurrah!!! We made it....Thank you to all concerned, My illustrious crew on the river, my ever resourceful crew on lande fund raising and of course many many loyal supporters ,well wishers and dontaors whithout whom my efforts would heve been in vain. The swim time recorded was 3 hours 45 minutes and ended between Blundell park and the Fish docks at Grimsby. We were severely hampered by a stiff wind on the nose which threw us plenty of white horses and rolling troughs which tossed us about a bit and held us off the south bank long enough for the new flood to make its presence felt, forcing us completely by Cleethorpes and the waiting supporters towards Grimsby and the very place we'd set out from earlier in the day. I was greeting back in the dock by many supporters and well wishers, needless to say it made all the effort very worthwhile indeed..a post swim gathering in our local pub  Brigg's Black Bull was enjoyed by many thanks the the kind generosity of Hosts Rick & Amber Smith..thank you all again for much financial and moral support throughout bith my training and eventual swim on and after the day... you have done me proud and together we have made a valid and worthwhile contribution to Macmillans funds...
