Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page for The Great Manx Bake-off.
The Great Manx Bake-Off is an event on the programme of the Isle of Man Food and Drink festival, on the weekend of the 26th and 27th September 2009. It's a cake competition judged by the Hairy Bikers, then an auction of the cakes, with all proceeds going to the Eve Appeal. Location: within the beautifully refurbished Villa Marina Arcade in Douglas.
What we're doing is inviting public entries in two categories: Professional and Home-bakers, to bake a Manx-themed cake using produce from the Isle of Man. All cakes must use Manx basic ingredients- for the flour, milk, butter and eggs, examples of which could include Laxey Mills Flour, Isle of Man creameries Milk and Butter, and local eggs. There are three awards: Judge's choice, Special Mentions, and the Winners of both categories. Your cake can be themed in any way, the more creative the better! Maybe you'll create a Tower of Refuge, Manx cat or even a replica of the TT course! Cakes will be judged on taste, creativity and presentation, and proportion of Manx ingredients.
All cakes will be on display in the Villa Marina arcade, bearing the bakers name and any comments by our semi-final judges, who are three highly esteemed professionals of Manx Produce and Women's Health on the Isle of Man.
Members of the public are invited to view the cake finalists before the judging and Auction on Saturday in the Villa Marina Arcade and place a "silent bid" which will be the auction starting bid for the cake you select. If you are the highest bidder for one of the final cakes you will receive it beautifully packaged and presented, delivered to your door if you are not present at the auction.
Come along to the Villa Marina, view the cakes, make a donation and take a sample home, join in the fun of the Hairy Bikers judging and auction, and take part in the Cake Quiz, testing your knowledge of Manx Produce.
There are also wonderful prizes on offer for Cake entrants, including Shoprite vouchers from our wonderful sponsor Shoprite, and perhaps a special gift from the Hairy Bikers...
If you, like me, would love to be part but aren't a baking-whiz- you can make a donation for The Eve Appeal here! We will be announcing to the media the amount of funds we raise in the Great Manx Bake-off, and the winners. I hope to raise £5000 this day for The Eve Appeal. Want to join in or have an enquiry? How you can help The Great Manx Bake-off for The Eve Appeal!
1. Make a donation here online- every year 6,600 more UK women find out they have ovarian cancer and 4,400 will die. The statistics are very sad, and we have victims from the Isle of Man who have suffered & lost their battle, suffered & won- so far-, and those who are still suffering the disease.
Moreover, the disease is often misdiagnosed until it is too late. Making a donation helps fund awareness-raising activities like the Great Manx Bake-off, and will lead to earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer; less suffering and a lower mortality rate.
2. Register your interest to enter The Great Manx Bake-off in either category: Professional (if you would like to enter as a bakery, cake or catering business, cafe or restaurant) or Home-baker (if you personally, or as a family or group of friends would like to enter)
3. Volunteer to help out at The Great Manx Bake-off: if you have experience with cakes and a personal interest in helping The Eve Appeal, the only women gynae cancer charity represented on the Island, you will be a great help on Friday and Saturday 25th & 26th September 2009!
4. Come make a bid and win a cake! At the entertaining auction orchestrated by the Hairy Bikers of BBC fame, on Saturday afternoon 26th September.
