In March 2009, we received the shocking news that our then 16 month old daughter, Luna, had bladder cancer. As the tumour was so large, we agreed to participate in a clinical trial using more aggressive chemotherapy. Three months later, Luna underwent major surgery and then continued with chemotherapy. The treatment was completed in October and Luna was announced clear of cancer. The risk of relapse over the next couple of years remains high but we are very optimistic.
Throughout this whole episode, Luna has been absolutely inspirational - a good humoured brave soldier with no respect whatsoever for sophisticated medical equipment or senior doctors. In fact, it is fair to say that Luna has given her parents the strength to get through it all.
We celebrate Luna's birthday on November 17th and would like to mark the occasion by raising money for the institution that has nurtured her during her illness and will continue to be a part of her life for many years ahead - Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital (GOSH). It is a place that no parent wants to have to take their child to, but once you are there, you realise you are part of a world class medical institution and yet also part of the caring GOSH family. It is not a depressing place at all. It is a place where miracles happen. It is also a place that, directly or indirectly (through collaborative research), treats children from all over the world.
We really do not want you to buy a present for Luna's birthday (she has been showered with very generous gifts this year). We would be extremely grateful though if you could make a donation to Great Ormond Street on her behalf. Whatever you decide to donate, you can make it anonymous, if you prefer.
Please give generously and we can really make a difference.
Thank you very much indeed.
With much love
Luna, Monica, David & Leo (the attention suffering dog)
