I will be taking part in a Tandem Skydive on the 9th of February 2013 near Cambrdige and raising money for Alzheimers Society.

I work and have worked with a lot of individuals who suffer with Alzheimers and some who have sadly died from this condition. I recently attended a 'Future for Dementia care' talk presented by Angela Rippen. It is amazing how much the Alzheimers Society have done to improve the future for Dementia care already and it is about time people knew there was more being done than people can see! Just to name a few things being done so far:

A lot of nurses and doctors have limited training on Dementia care and a statistic shows that only 12% of 700 nurses have had Dementia care training. With extra funding, healthcare centres and hospitals can offer professionals training so they are aware of Dementia and how some people may act when they have it.

There are new projects that are making hospitals friendly aware and care homes are also being expected to up their care and take mor eresponsiblity over their patients (both with dementia and without). This will be done by tightening controls especially on those who plan to open a new care home. Unannounced visits will also be made.

Even facebook pages are being created to swap ideas and show awareness.

The Alzheimers Society are Government supported not Government lead!

Before, the time that Dementia patients were in hospital was 28 days longer than average patients. This has been condensed to 2-3 days which is astonishing!

These are just a few things which have already changed. With support there are plans to take steps to further improve the future for Dementia care for patients and also family and other loved ones.
