Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. It is not just one disease, but a large group of almost one hundred diseases. 2,000,000 people in the UK are currently diagnosed with cancer, and in Sweden 50,000 people are diagnosed every year. One in four people die from cancer…and it can attack anyone. Given this high prevalence, I am sure that many of you reading this are/have been affected in one way or another. And, you would probably agree with me that it can be pretty tough to handle. The feeling of not being able to help can be very frustrating, and this project has the following three objectives:

1) To raise money for cancer research. Although we can’t change the past, we can help change the future.

2) To remember that many people are affected by cancer and that we are not alone. We are in this together. This project does not only involve me, but anyone who wishes to join in.

3) To focus on positive things during a tough period of time.

And this is how it will be done (true British fundraising style!):
There is an annual 10K race for girls of all ages called "Tjejmilen” (translated: “the 10K for girls”) which takes place in the last weekend of August in Stockholm, Sweden. The race is a massive event which last year held nearly 30,000 runners. They also have a close link with the "pink ribbon", and at some places during the run there’s an option of running on a pink pathway, which automatically makes the runner donate money for the breast cancer fund.  If you’d like to find out more about the race, check out their website on www.tjejmilen.se or, for information in English http://www.tjejmilen.se/Start/index.cfm?Lan_ID=3

Some of you might think that running 10K is a bit lame, and that a marathon or triathlon would be a greater challenge. However, the reason I picked this event is because of its close connection with the breast cancer fund. I am hoping that many of my friends and family will join me in this project and it would be a nice, social thing to do together (with an amazing cause).  And, to compensate for the “lameness”, I have set myself the target of completing the race in 44 minutes and also to beat my position from last year (319th).

The money raised will be donated to Cancer Research.

Cancer Research is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. They:

*carry out world-class research to improve understanding of cancer and find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer;

*ensure that their findings are used to improve the lives of all cancer patients and helping people to understand cancer, the progress and the choices each person can make;

*work in partnership with others to achieve the greatest impact in the global fight against cancer

As for donations, I have decided not set a target since I strongly believe that every penny counts.  Since so many people are affected by this horrible disease, I am hoping that there will be a great interest in joining together to help beating it!!

We can’t change the past but we can definitely change the future. I’m desperately counting on your support and I’d greatly appreciate any help you can offer.

There are 5 ways in which you can help:

1. Donate money!
If you feel that you could spare a couple of pounds for this amazing cause, please donate whatever amount you feel you could afford, for the cancer fund. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Cancer Research gets your money faster and, if you’re a taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

If you go for this option, please don’t wait until August to do the donation. It would be extremely encouraging to see the donations adding up as we go through these months.

2. Join me in the run! (If you are a girl...)
Sign up on www.tjejmilen.se , let me know that you have entered & I’ll add your name to the team list. There are 9 start groups in the race and the last group is for those who wish to walk slowly to enjoy the amazing scenery, so you definitely don’t have to be a runner to pick this option. And, there’s absolutely no pressure of finding your own sponsors.

Also, we are planning fun social events for the evening...

Saturday 29th August: UNDERBARA BAR, Östgötagatan 33, Stockholm, Sweden (Tube station: Medborgarplatsen)

Bring all your friends to join us in a fun evening out with the aim of raising money for cancer research (cancerfonden). Brilliant performers from spokenword (www.spokenword.se) will entertain us. More information to follow…

3. Come and support!
Stand on the sideline, support and cheer and enjoy the beautiful city. There are very cheap flights, and do you really need a better excuse for a weekend holiday in Stockholm in August?

4. Spread the message!
Pass on this message and the link to the fundraising page to anyone you think might have an interest to either join in the run or to donate money.

5. Support!
Simply support everyone and anyone who is affected by cancer, their family and friends.

Please have a thorough think about those five options and I am pretty sure you can find one, two, three or even four that suit you. With a little bit of help by many of my friends, this could lead to a pretty amazing thing. Please let me know if you have any questions! (lottttchen@hotmail.com)
