Story
Beginning 20th August I will hiking the beautiful but challenging GR5/52 (Grande Randomee or 'big hike'!) route through the Alps.
I will be walking, camping and navigating unassisted and carrying my own kit for 18 days for the 228 miles from Modane to Menton. Its an average of 12.6 miles per day, ascending 24,000m and descending 21,000m in total .... I've been told there's no WiFi up there so the navigation alone will be a challenge for me!
Working for the MND Association and seeing how it cruelly and mercilessly devastates families has made me and the many inspiring people I have the privilege of working with, want to do all we can to end it.
What MND does to people and their families is heartbreaking.
MND attacks the brain and spinal cord affecting the nerves which control muscles. Meaning it affects movement, speech, swallowing and eventually breathing. People are usually fully aware of what’s happening and are in essence ‘locked in’ their failing body.
Today, six people in the UK will be told they have MND. Most of these people will die within 2 years, more than a third, within a year.
MND does not discriminate. It can affect male, female, old, young, healthy, fit and active people.
There is currently no effective treatment and no cure.
Thank you for helping us get closer to a world free from MND.
