Justin Hansen – the Gutless Kayaker –has had most of his intestines removed due to Crohn's disease and is raising funds for research into intestinal failure carried out by St Mark’s Hospital and Academic Institute charitable foundation (registered UK charity 1140930). So far, Justin has raised over £30,000 for this invaluable research. If you know anyone who has ever suffered from bowel disease, cancer, Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, IBS, or has a stoma, then the chances are that this research has been or will be of benefit to them. With bowel cancer and related conditions claiming more lives this is a real opportunity to help make a difference.
Due to Crohn's disease most of Justin's intestines have been removed. He needs at least 12 hours of intravenous nutrition (total parenteral nutrition: TPN) every day to survive. For this trip Justin is connected to his intravenous feed the entire time! 24 hours every day - even while paddling. He carries out all his aseptic procedures in a little cabin at the back of a narrowboat.
WHO ARE WE FUNDRAISING FOR?
St. Mark's Hospital in Harrow, London specialises in intestinal failure and is responsible for Justin's treatment. The hospital has a charitable arm (St Mark's Hospital Foundation) that carries out leading edge research into intestinal failure, including bowel cancer, Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis.
