We fund education-training-living expenses to support young adults with cancer

Story

Over the last bank holiday weekend in May, we shall be embarking upon the 3 Peaks Challenge in order to raise money for the charity set up in my Brother's name;

THE JOE GILLIGAN TRUST.

The Challenge will commence on Saturday 27th May, 12:00pm at Ben Nevis in Fort William. We will then continue down to the Lakes to tackle Scafell Pike (in the dark!). The 3rd and final Peak will be Snowdon where we will conclude our Challenge, hopefully by 12:00pm on Sunday 28th May thus completing the 3 Peak Challenge in 24 hours!

ABOUT THE JOE GILLIGAN TRUST...

Joe’s illness

Pineal Germ  Cell Tumour (Teratoma)
Joe was diagnosed with a Pineal Germ Cell Tumour (Teratoma) on March 17th 2008. The tumour  secreted Alpa feta Protein which was elevated. He was admitted to the  Queen Elizabeth Hospital Young Persons Unit in Birmingham for treatment.  He had Brain Surgery - Endoscopic third ventriculoscopy to alleviate  his main symptom which was headaches caused by Hydrocephalus.  He then had extensive Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.

We are not medical experts  but we do have first hand experience of this illness, which we understand  to be a malignancy (Cancer) mainly found in younger people. After Joe’s  initial diagnosis we found it very difficult to find support groups  or other parents in a similar dilemma. Most of the research, funding,  trials etc seem to be aimed at the more common Cancers.

The Joe Gilligan Trust was set up in late 2009 and exists to support and improve the lives of teenagers and young adults fighting with Cancer.
As Joe was a drummer, the trust will also provide support for young musicians.
