Story
What am I going to attempt?
I am going to try and run from John O'Groats in Scotland to Lands End, in May next year (2014). Its only 980 miles, which should be just a walk in the park, just 37 and a half marathons!
So, how can I make it a little harder on myself?
well, I am going to do this completely unsupported, carrying everything I need for the journey on my back. All food, tent, clothes, emergency equipment, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, etc, will be in a rucksack, and I will sleep rough at the side of the road. The only thing I will be allowed to take on, from taps, streams, rivers and shops will be water. No help can be given from anyone outside the effort, apart from words of encouragement. (although you are more than welcome to run a few miles with me, to keep me company).
I am also very lucky in this challenge to have two great friends who will cycle through Scotland with me whilst I run, for security reasons, and then they will carry on, on their own challenge down to Lands End.
Will I make it?
well, thats the part where it becomes a challenge. I have to carefully plan how fast I can run and how far I can run each day, so that I know how many days food I need to carry. Then If I run out of food 18 days into the challenge with two days more to run, what do I do? do I quit? can I forage for food for the last day? What If I am injured? All this is making the planning very difficult.
So why am I doing this?
Most of my family have been soldiers. My father, my uncles, my cousins, my brother and myself. We have all seen the newspaper reports showing wounded soldiers coming home from conflicts abroad, and the injustices that the soldiers suffer. They are not looked after well enough by the government that they serve, and I thought I would try and help in a little way.
