Students of typography and design have produced designs to help raise money for one of the major charities who are ensuring money filters through successfully to help people of Japan since the country was ravaged by a tsumani caused by an earthquake.
Just to put you in the picture, Cavendish College London is a popular choice for many Japanese students. This year in our visual communication group there are 5 out of twelve Japanese students enrolled.
This week tutor Paul Wright worked with the students to talk about how the events which happened in Japan had affected them. The main response from students was upbeat. There families and friends are largely unaffected. Although one student has been affected by the problems.
Last week the student affected wanted advice on how it would be possible to raise cash to help – in what ever way possible.
Two days ago we decided against simply asking for cash contributions. The most we could imagine from that asking people simply to give might not raise anything more than a token of under a hundred pounds. We thought we'd try to raise a modest yet significant amount.
To ensure students have opportunity to support their friend I asked them to consider their position as to ways in which we could raise a more significant amount of support – be it in cash or as building awareness.
The outcome is shown here as ten poster designs which are in support of ensuring the work of a major charity can reach their monetary target in support of Japan.
The messages in the designs range from reading about the numbers of those who need help to re-build their lives to simple messages of why it is important to think and actually donate as contribution no matter how little you think you can.
In order to make sure you can read the messages of support for Japan and the students have created a flickr webpage. You can see their work there. There is also a way of seeing the work as a short film without soundtrack at www.facebook.com/typographyatcavendish or www.whatthewant.tumblr.com
The aim of the communication is to connect with friends and colleagues and ask that you make a donation. If you have already made a donation or otherwise then we really do hope you think that the work we have produced as a reaction to the problems that'll be affecting Japan for the following hours, day, months and years ahead.
Were raising donations for charity which already has an established global reach. http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/japan-earthquake-tsunami-relief/ They're not UK based, but for us it's not about location, it's simply a matter of knowing the chairty is totally transparent and any money donated to them will go one some good cause even if the funds are diverted elsewhere other than Japan.
What we're asking in our own humble way is to please donate to via this Just Giving page. Our personal target is to raise something in the area of £1000.
Again, thank you, students and teaching staff of The Creative Studies Department Cavendish College London
