Isla was with us 24hours but has made an enormous impact on our lives. A younger sister for Evan and Thea and a third child for us, wanted, loved, cherished and incredibly missed.
We found out a week before Isla was born that she had a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome - one half of her heart hadn't developed at all. Her prognosis was exceptionally poor. Her short life was full of love, she was continuously cuddled, always warm and never in pain or frightened. Isla had grown inside me for 33weeks and we'd had 5 'normal' scans before the one that revealed the diagnosis.
Many people find out much earlier in pregnancy that their child is not developing 'normally'. Even with the medical backgrounds we both have making the right decision for Isla was hard. ARC give good, balanced, sensible information to parents about what to do with the results of antenatal tests. We found their leaflets helpful.
We're also donating to another charity in Isla's name. This is the PROMPT foundation which aims to train health professionals in techniques to help reduce the chances of birth injuries in the developing world. Do email me nataliewhitton@yahoo.co.uk for more information on how to donate to them.
