Story
What is the done thing to celebrate 5 whole fit and healthy years in remission from cancer? Run 'til you puke, of course, in TWO big races!
Being in remission for 5 years is not just a great physical and emotional milestone worthy of celebration, it also means that my chances of getting ill again are lower than they have ever been. So I want to prove to myself and everyone else that all that nasty treatment has left me in good enough shape to really push myself physically.
You all know I'm not built for running. Hourglass may be lovely in many ways, but it's a bugger to haul this arse round at anything faster than a brisk walk for longer than a mile, so this is a proper challenge for me. I'm taking it in two stages - a 10k in July and then the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October. It's going to be tough, but you can follow my progress at http://juleslearnstorun.blogspot.co.uk.
Steve's going to join me. We celebrate 15 years of marriage this year and reckon that we might as well do something together. Except we train and run completely separately, of course, because he's actually bloody good.
We're both running for Brook because it's such a vital organisation. Sexual health and wellbeing for young people may make some people uncomfortable, but helping young people negotiate safe, healthy and happy relationships is so important. Every day - through our services, our helpline or our campaigns, we see the effects that a lack of information, education or support can have on a young person. It can be devastating and sometimes Brook is the only place a vulnerable young person finds support and safety.
So please do try and give something - I'm really grateful for your support.
