Türkiye and Syria Earthquake
Thousands have died in devastating earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria and multiple aftershocks have put thousands of children at risk.
On 6 February 2023, a powerful and deadly earthquake struck southern and central Türkiye.
It occurred 34 km west of the city of Gaziantep at 04:17 local time causing widespread damage in Türkiye and Syria.
Reports from BBC state the death toll, which currently stands at more than 4,500 people, has increased rapidly since the first earthquake struck early on Monday morning.
UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for an international response to the crisis, saying that many of the families hit by the disaster were “already in dire need of humanitarian aid in areas where access is a challenge”.
