Story
My name is Helen Foster. I was born in May 1997, which makes me 17 years old. Cancer has already affected my life.
A close family friend of ours was diagnosed with Cancer in December 2011. I organised fundraising events for various cancer charities, including Woodlands Cancer Centre. This wasn't my first piece of solo fundraising.
I've taken part in may fundraising activities with groups such as schools, Brownies and Guides. I also organised a cake sale on my village green for Comic Relief in 2011 when I was 13 years old. I raised £250.
In November 2011, aged 14, I organised another cake sale for Children In Need. This time I raised £118.
The fundraising I have done for cancer charities is the biggest I have done so far. I asked Eastenders star Himesh Patel to open the event, of which he agreed. There was a cake stall, book stall, bric a brac sale, guess the weight of the cake, guess the name of the teddy bear, tombola, sweepstakes, raffles and refreshments. Huntingdon Fire Station attended the event and the Hunts Post published photo's in the following weeks newspaper. Our local MP, Johnathon Djonogly attended the event and he also sent me a handwritten letter from the House Of Commons. Altogether, I raised £1032.03!
My form tutor at school nominated me for Young People Of The Year Award, or YOPEY, as it is better known. I attended the finals at Ely Cathedral on October 3rd 2012, scooping the award of Junior Young Person Of The Year Award. I donated £100 to Cancer Research UK. I have repeated my Cancer Research UK Event in April 2013, with Warwick Davis opening the event. Altogether, I have raised about £2700 singlehandedly for different charities.
My close family friend has since passed away. I wish she was here to see me win the award. I wish she was here to see my continued fundraising. However, I know that she is watching me, somewhere.
I continued to fundraise for Cancer Research UK, alongside MacMillan Cancer Support and The Woodland Cancer Centre in Hinchingbrooke Hospital in 2014. This is my local cancer ward. I am going to do this through a Rainbow Of Hope fundraiser raising £1531.65!
I am organising a Time For Tea event in aid of The Woodland Cancer Care Centre on 25th April 2015. More details to follow shortly. I am aiming to raise £5000 by the end of 2015. You can help me reach my fundraising target! Donate on my JustGiving website!www.justgiving.com/helenfoster2505
