Each week at least twelve young people in the UK die suddenly as a result of undiagnosed heart conditions. At Cardiac Risk In the Young we aim to save young lives & to help those affected by young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). We do this by providing support, information & screening those affected.

Story

Dear friends,

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.  In a minute of excitement that we might later regret, we have decided to enter ourselves into the Berlin Marathon 2009 which takes place on 20th September. Both of us have been training hard and are sure that come September we will be ready!

The motivation behind running is two fold, firstly for bragging rights, and secondly but most importantly it gives us a chance to raise money for a charity for which we both hold dear.

You can read a little about Cardiac Risk in the Young on the left hand side of the screen. Tom’s friend Jack would now like to say a few words about the charity:

“Cardiac Risk in the Young is a charity supported by the British Heart Foundation. As well as raising awareness, CRY campaigns for national heart screening, sponsors medical research and offers ECG testing.

CRY also offers support to those who have suffered a bereavement. In 2007, my girlfriend Hannah died in her sleep as a result of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. In the UK, 12 young adults a week die suddenly and unexpectedly as a result of diagnosable heart problems.

Having the support of CRY immeasurably helped Hannah’s family and all of us affected. CRY’s campaign also gave us a positive focus and helped us feel less isolated by meeting other people who had been through similar experiences.

Tom and I have been friends our whole lives and his and Helen’s decision to run the marathon for CRY means a great deal to me, Hannah’s family and everyone involved with the charity.”

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Cardiac Risk in the Young gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.'

Ps: Helen and Tom are funding the travel, accommodation and participation fee out of their own pockets. The place was not provided by C.R.Y.. This is important as it allows Gift Aid and 3% supplement to be claimed on any donations, which would not otherwise be the case.
