It is estimated that 1.4 billion people worldwide live below the extreme poverty line. In 2005 the World Bank defined this extreme poverty as living on less than £1 a day. This means the equivalent of living on £1 a day, in the UK, buying British goods.

For the whole month of January I will be taking on the challenge of living below the line. This means for the next month  I will be having a food and drink budget of £1 a day. I love my food and drink so this is going to be a massive challenge for me.

I am taking on this challenge to raise awarness and money for an amazing charity called Tearfund. Tearfund works in more than 50 countries, responding to disasters, campaigning for justice and partnering with local churches to support local communities.

I have also recently been chosen to participate on International Citizen Service (ICS) in association with Tearfund.  This is a fantastic opportunity for volunteers, like me, to help some of the poorest people in the world and learn valuable new skills at the same time.  Sponsored by the governement, it’s a programme that brings young people from different countries together to fight poverty. 

I will be volunteering for 10 weeks in April in one of Tearfunds targeted countries. During which time we will be living with a local family and working in a community work on various projects run by the charity. As part of my commitment to the programme I have pledged to raise £1500 for Tearfund. This £1500 will NOT go towards the payment of my trip, but will go straight to Tearfund and go towards their various humanitarian projects worldwide.
