Success for the Guys Buoys and a Mary
We successfully swam the English Channel as a relay on the 8th September 2008, in 13 hours and 7 minutes. After almost giving up on the weather we had a window of opportunity at 0430am on Monday morning. Despite Pete swimming in circles for the first 20 minutes and then colliding with the boat- twice! we struggled across in a reasonable time. Heavy seas all the way meaning we drank plenty of sea and were able to test our gag reflexes. We even spotted dolphins about halfway across. Several other boats turned back but stupidly we stuck it out. After our emotional 3rd hour in the water, Nick got a kiss from a French girl as he beached at Calais which cheered him up after being disappointed in only having to swim 7 minutes of his 3rd leg to get there!
We are a group of friends all linked by Guy's Hospital and Guy's Hospital Rugby Club, The Oldest Rugby Club in the World. We have always wanted to complete this challenge and Chewie's organisational skills secured us a plum spot in September. We trained in two ways: swimming in cold places and eating/drinking a lot.
Thanks you so much to those who have already given and please help us reach our target of 10K. Thanks to Steve Challacombe for coming along as our dental physio and all our wives who put up with months of ridiculous early morning training.
