In memory of Harry Shaw
We would love Harry's story to inspire fundraising for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity because only research can stop this awful disease.

Story

More research is needed for children's cancer and it is not right that in 2019 young children are dying cruelly from this horrible disease.

Although rare, Ewing's sarcoma is not well understood and we need to do more to understand how to combat this terrible disease.

Friends of the Shaw family, Toby and Tom are raising funds for Harry’s Giant Pledge, to fund research by the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and help other children like Harry. It’s the only way to stop this awful disease.

With the permission of Harry’s family, we would like to share his story:

On 1stJune 2019, 5 year old Harry Shaw took his last breath after a tough 10 month battle with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.

Harry’s story reached out across the world and touched many people, but the hole he leaves in his family cannot be filled. However, it has been inspirational to see the example of Harry’s courage and determination raise so much money for research, and that is why we are looking to spread his story even more widely and add to the money that Harry has already raised.

One of Harry’s favourite phrases throughout chemotherapy was ‘Let’s just get it done’. This inspiring attitude, whilst undergoing painful treatment, was incredible. But the truth is that the last few weeks of Harry’s life were marked by terrible pain and suffering that no human, least of all a 5 year old boy, should endure.

Inspired by Harry’s story, and touched spiritually by his courage and the courage of his family throughout, we have chosen to undertake a pilgrimage in memory of Harry- but with a twist.

In the spirit of ‘Let’s just get it done’, we are planning to complete the 156.8 mile Portuguese Camino from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain in just three and a half days.

Day 1: begin the Camino (pilgrimage) in Porto; 35.5 miles (stages 15+16)

Day 2: 45.7 miles (stages 17+18+19)

Day 3: 47.8 miles (stages 20+21+22+23)

Day 4: 27.8 miles (stages 24+25); finish in Santiago de Compostella

All costs will be met by us; all of your money goes to Harry’s Giant Pledge and the Royal Marsden.

We will start The Camino on Friday 4 Oct and complete it on Monday 7 Oct. Toby and I are both fathers who have been deeply moved and inspired by Harry’s story, but we are also average guys with sedentary office jobs, and this will be a huge challenge for us! Please, in the spirit of ‘Let’s just get it done’, in Harry’s memory and in the hopes that we can prevent cases like this in the future: please give as generously as you can.

Thank you
